Lusse or Lucia According to the Julian calendar, December 13 was the day of the Winter Solstice. This was considered a dangerous night, where animals were thought to be able to speak, and spirits and supernatural beings abound. It eventually results in a tiered arrangement like this. In fact, it’s not Christmas without it! Stand by for a recipe in a separate posting!įor four consecutive Sundays, a candle is lit. To me, this is one of the most quintessential parts of the Holidays. This treat premieres every year on the First of Advent. Then, there’s the Glögg! A wonderful mulled wine, which is enjoyed warm and served with slivered almonds and raisins. This is also when the normally scarce church attendance spikes in Sweden, as there are usually fabulous concerts offered in the churches. It’s usually not much more than lighting a candle (you light a new one each Sunday, so by Christmas you have a nice, four-tiered arrangement) and hanging a lit star in your window. Instead, in my native Sweden, the kickoff off the Holiday Season starts with the First of Advent. We’re so incredibly lucky, it should do us well to sit down and meditate awhile on how fortunate we are, and give thanks accordingly. I’m sad to say we don’t have a version of that overseas, as I think it’s a really nice holiday. Here in the US, Thanksgiving kicks it off. There are parallels in the most unexpected places! Even more so, I find it fascinating to try to track where all these traditions originated and how they have developed along the way. ![]() Okay – so the Holiday Madness is upon us, yet again! Since I’m a transplant away from my own country, I always think it’s fun to compare traditions – especially since the US represents such a wide range of cultures.

In many animal species the males are larger and stronger, but in hawks the difference in size between the sexes is reversed, and females are larger. Not only can hawks see greater distances than humans, but their visual acuity (the ability to see clearly) is eight times that of ours. Their sense of hearing is excellent, and their eyesight the best in the entire animal world. Some species undertake long migrational journeys, traveling thousands of miles each year – a testimony to their strength and stamina. Swift fliers, some hawks can attain speeds of over 150 mph when diving. Their feet are equipped with sharp, curved talons for capturing prey, and their strong beaks are hooked for biting and tearing flesh. Unfortunately, the home experience wasn't much better. ![]() So I decided to wait until I could make them at home to see what the difference was. The texture was off, and the outside was only crispy where the nuggets weren't touching the tray they were baked on. While I liked the meal well enough, they didn't come off as chicken replacements to me. ![]() My first experience with the Beyond Nuggets was at a pizza place outside of Washington, DC, which Beyond had partnered with as a way of helping more places offer quick plant-based options. But there are a ton of other options out there that may satisfy more completely. If you've got an air fryer handy and are just looking for a quick snack, these aren't bad. At only 10 grams of protein for the recommended four-nugget serving at 180 calories, these aren't as nutritious as many other plant-based nuggets I've sampled. If your goal is to buy something that replicates that fast food nugget, you probably won't be totally satisfied with how chewy this nugget is. While the flavor of these nuggets are solid, I found the texture of the filling a little less satisfying. The outside stayed nice and crispy, and the inside dried out a lot less versus the standard instructions. The thing I found most interesting about these nuggets is they were better in the air fryer than they were using the conventional oven instructions. I've had several plant-based goodies from Alpha Foods before, including the company's breakfast sandwiches and burritos, but it wasn't until CNET's McKenzie Dillon raved about these nuggets that I grabbed a bag. There's a small box of 12 for someone who wants these as an occasional treat, and multiple larger sizes for families or people who really love nuggets. It's also nice that Quorn nuggets come in varied containers. With the right dipping sauce, you won't notice anyway. You don't get a ton of flavor on the inside, which isn't a bad thing for folks who want something that doesn't taste like chicken. It's the perfect dipping nugget, size- and shape-wise, and the interior has an almost fluffy consistency. Quorn nuggets are a higher 270 calories per five nuggets, due in no small part to the fantastic exterior texture. As long as you follow the instructions, the end result is delicious no matter what you're making. Quorn's plant-based meats are made with mycoprotein, part of the fungi family - which means you're eating high-protein mushrooms (of a sort). Quorn has been tremendously successful in Europe and is slowly becoming more popular here in the US. Sometimes looking for the right plant-based meal involves checking the box to make sure everything you're eating isn't entirely soy. |
